Halloween Sugar Cookie Witch Hat

The first thing you will want to do is grab a Witch Hat Cookie Cutter. There are several to choose from and some even come in sets so you could make other spooky cutouts to go with your Witch’s Hats. You might also need to order some gel food coloring as well to get the dark colors you want without it thinning your icing out.
Then round up your kids to help you decorate these and create some of the best and most adorable Halloween sugar cookie witch hats you’ve ever seen. These are black and purple, but you can easily make them any color you want. Green and orange are also great choices for Halloween.
This simple sugar cookie recipe will need to set in the refrigerator for a few hours to overnight before you cut them, so you may want to prepare it in advance then grab the kids to help you out with the cutting, baking and decorating.

Halloween Sugar Cookie Witch Hat
Ingredients
- 5 C flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 1/2 C soft unsalted butter
- 2 C granulated sugar
- 4 eggs
- For Icing:
- 2-3 tbsp milk
- 1 C powder sugar
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- Black & purple gel food coloring
Instructions

Cream the softened butter and sugar until the combination is smooth and not grainy.

Mix in 4 eggs and vanilla then continue mixing until well combined

Sift the four, baking powder, and salt together.

Add the dry mixture to the wet mixture.

Continue mixing to make sure all ingredients are thoroughly blended.

Make the dough into a ball, wrap it in plastic wrap completely covering the entire dough ball.

Put in the refrigerator for about 6 hours or overnight. Check to see if the dough is firm.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

Pull the cookie dough out of the refrigerator and sit it out to soften up a bit.

Put flour out on the wood cutting board, rub flour on the rolling pin, and work some flour into the batter. (if necessary).

Roll cookie dough out o 1/4 inch thickness. Using cookie cutter, begin cutting out cookies.

Line the cookie sheet with parchment paper.

Using a metal spatula move the cut cookie to the parchment lined cookie sheet.

Bake at 325 degrees for 8 minutes. Check to see if cookies are thoroughly baked.

Take cookies off of the cookie sheet and put on a wire rack to cool completely. (About 10 minutes).

For Icing:

Combine all ingredients except food coloring into a mixing bowl and mix for 3-4 minutes.

If icing is not stiff enough add 1/4 cup powdered sugar.

Leave icing in large bowl. Take out 1 bowl, put 1/4 of icing in this bowl. Put several drops of black gel food coloring into the large bowl with the majority of the icing. Stir to mix the color throughout the entire bowl of icing.

In the smaller bowl containing the 4th amount of the icing, add several drops of purple gel food coloring. Mixing well.

Spoon each of the icings into individual frosting bags with a #5 tips.... twist the open end of the

bag to push the icing to the tip.

Add water to the base icing mix (1 tsp) and mix it in. Use this icing to fill in the cookie.

Allow the black outline at least 30 seconds to dry before filling the body of the cookie in with the other thinner black icing*. ( After outlining all of the witches hat cookies you can push the remaining icing into a bowl and add the 1 tsp of water and mix well to get the right consistency.) Using a butter knife to spread it from the outlined part inwards to the center.

Set these aside and allow to completely dry about 5-10 hours
